"What sets this record apart from others like it is the songwriting. Its honest, clever, and, at times, humorous lyrics make you listen beyond the catchy hook lines and imaginative telecaster solos. Not one to be known for trite tunes, Borden demonstrates a flair classic honky-tonk with songs like 'Alcohol of Fame' and 'Heartbreak 101.' Then there's the story-telling songs like 'Jacksboro Highway' and "The Daisy Red Ryder.' The CD begins with a blistering road number entitled 'Truckstop Confessions' and ends with a rocker entitled 'The Fifth.' Somewhere in-between is the Jim Lauderdale-ish "Wayward Heart' and the Dwight Yoakam-ish 'What Would Your Heart Say.' Local legend Dale Watson even joins in on the conversational 'Honky-Tonk Time Machine.' This CD will likely never receive commecial radio airplay because, simply put, it's just too good. But that's okay. While record promotors are busy trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator, guys like Michael Shane Borden and the Diesel Kings are finding out that there are still a lot of folks who are looking for something beyond the pre-fab garbage being pedaled by the big labels. It's about time somebody put the twang back into Texas Music." |
